/ ABSTRACT
Spotlight is an interactive installation chose by the Locarno Film Festival to be exposed in 2023 during the 76th edition of the festival. The installations aims to highlight the voices and stories of the LocarnoFilm Festival, through the use of lights, relay switches, sensors, bone conduction listening devices and background audio recordings sampled from various historical points of the Festival.

/ INTERFACE AND INTERACTION MODALITY
The project is a system of light bulbs, spotlights and bone conduction listening devices that work together with Arduino Uno Micro processors and Time of Flight distance sensors, to detect the presence of the user within a space, creating an immersive auditory experience.

/ USER EXPERIENCE
As the user enters a darkened space, they start experiencing the installation through a soundscape of various audio recordings.
This immerses the user in a sea of sound, as they wander through the darkened space, illuminated by numerous glowing objects. As they move deeper into the space, light bulbs turn on as they move near them, illuminating the space, revealing circular information panels on the floor, relating to the history of the Festival.
As the user approaches these circles, the sensors trigger spotlights that light up these circles, and bring attention to the hanging objects that invite the users to pick them up in their hands and place them on their ears. An audio recording starts, audible only to the person holding the object to their ear. This action invites other users to pick up the hanging objects distributed around the space.
After listening to the audio that contextualizes the various editions of the Festival, a QR code on the circular information panel leads the users to more information within the Festival’s app, allowing them to dive deeper into the history of theFestival.

/RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CONTEXT
Spotlight aims to be an intuitive and immersive experience for users, pared down to a mainly auditory experience. The initial prototype of 3 bulbs and 2 spotlights with the accompanying bone conduction listening objects, is meant to a be a proof of concept. Eventually, there will be 7 spotlights with 70 bulbs, 1 spotlight representing 1 decade of the Festival, highlighting an important event for each decade, and making users aware of the rich and storied history of the Festival.
